Bed bugs: how to spot and treat them

Bed bugs are spreading more and more, mainly due to travel and tourism. They hide in mattresses, bed frames and furniture and are notoriously hard to eliminate without a specialised method.

How to recognise bed bugs

Small, reddish-brown insects the size of an apple seed, visible in mattress seams and crevices.

Often the first sign is a row of bites on the skin in the morning.

Signs of an infestation

Small dark spots (droppings) on sheets and mattresses, blood stains and shed skins.

In heavy infestations a characteristic odour may be noticed, but on its own it is not a reliable way to identify bed bugs.

What to do immediately

Don't move mattresses and clothes to other rooms — this spreads the infestation.

Wash bedding and clothes at high temperature and seal anything that can't be washed in bags.

Avoid uncontrolled use of insecticides, as it can make the problem harder to treat. In addition, some bed-bug populations are resistant to certain active substances.

Professional treatment

Professional bed-bug treatment is based on locating the infested areas and applying suitable methods, such as high-temperature dry steam and targeted insecticides where required. Depending on the extent of the infestation, repeat treatments and checks are carried out to assess effectiveness.

Prevention after travel

Check luggage and clothes after staying in hotels.

Inspect second-hand furniture and mattresses before bringing them home.
